This quote on education blew my mind…

Happy Monday! 

I’m feeling well-rested and optimistic after a few days to relax and enjoy time with friends and family.

I was reading the other day, and came across a quote I wanted to share with you. It’s by G.K. Chesterton:

“The most important fact about the subject of education is that there is no such thing. Education is not a subject and it does not deal in subjects. It is instead the transfer of a way of life.”

The transfer of a way of life. Wow.

And yes.

Chesterton’s words encapsulate a critical truth that simply goes unnoticed by most people. 

Education is not merely imparting knowledge in core subjects like math, science, or history. Sure, our kids are taught those subjects along the way (taught and learn cannot be used interchangeably here) but at its heart, the “education” they receive is really about shaping their worldview and values. 

When we send our kids off to school, we are entrusting them to people and institutions who, in many cases, do not share our values or vision for what is right and true.

For example, many history textbooks emphasize the mistakes and shortcomings of our founders while glossing over their remarkable achievements and the context in which they operated.

This selective storytelling leads kids to develop a cynical view of America and, by extension, a lack of appreciation for the freedoms they enjoy today.

History is not just a series of dates and events to be memorized; it is a narrative that shapes our understanding of who we are, where we come from, and what we stand for.

Unfortunately, much of what is taught in schools today presents a purposely skewed version of history. Key events are often interpreted through a lens that downplays the principles of liberty and personal responsibility that our nation was founded upon.

In short, it is agenda-driven. Just like most everything else that is taught in schools today. Remember when they tried to tell us that math was racist?

This is why we, as parents, grandparents, and good teachers, have to take things into our own hands.

We can’t afford to be indifferent to the “way of life” being transferred to our kids. We can’t stand by while a one-sided narrative that aligns with the agenda of those in power is taught to them as moral and good when it simply isn’t.

Our work at the Tuttle Twins has always been focused on providing resources that tell the truth. Not “his truth” or “her truth” or “their truth” but the foundational principles that have been historically proven to lead to the greatest degree of human prosperity and flourishing. 

Our America’s History books and curriculum are designed to give kids a well-rounded understanding of the past while helping them appreciate the importance of these lessons in shaping a peaceful and free society.

The more concerned adults who take serious the responsibility to guard the “way of life” we are transferring to the next generation, the brighter the future will be.
