Remember a couple of years ago, when the message of the petty tyrants and their supporters was, “It’s a private company, they can do whatever they want!” any time someone got booted off social media for stepping outside the approved narrative?
The loudest voices were cheering on Big Tech’s decisions to silence whoever didn’t toe the line, because, well, those decisions elevated their voices and neatly disappeared any challenge to their insanity.
But now, with Elon Musk opening X to a broader range of perspectives—truly offering a place for a free exchange of ideas—the tune has changed.
Suddenly, those same voices are saying that free speech is an “unmitigated disaster” and that we need “aggressive government regulation” of speech platforms.
Funny how that works, isn’t it?
The reality is, free speech was never supposed to be a neat, comfortable thing—it’s messy, it’s loud, and sometimes it means hearing things that make us uncomfortable.
But that’s the whole point.
In the open air of public debate, bad ideas get exposed for what they are—false, harmful, or just plain dumb.
They wither in the sunlight.
They are crushed in the court of public opinion.
But when those ideas get shoved underground through censorship? That’s when they really become dangerous. Instead of facing public scrutiny, they grow in the dark where anonymity and secrecy provide a fertile breeding ground for actual evil to take root.
It’s no surprise that those who celebrated censorship are now asking for government control over speech platforms. They see clearly that an open platform allows for the kind of conversations they’d rather avoid.
True freedom means allowing the uncomfortable and trusting that, given the chance, people will choose truth over lies.
At the Tuttle Twins, we believe that kids (and adults!) should be free to think, question, and challenge ideas.
That’s why our books teach the value of free speech, critical thinking, and the free market—concepts that are more important than ever in a world where so many are quick to silence what they don’t want to hear.
And right now, we’re making it easier than ever to stock up on those ideas.
